Instant of a simulation in which two black holes merge. The collision of two rotating wormholes would trigger a similar deformation of space-time, leaving 'echoes' in the signal.

Simulation of caustic echoes from a rotating black hole triggered by a massless scalar pulse perturbation at 6M. The background Kerr black hole has spin parameter a=0.7. Color and height of the surfaces corresponds to the strength of the perturbation on the equatorial plane.

Left panel shows the top-down view from the positive z-axis emphasizing frame dragging. Right panel shows a generic bird's-eye view, emphasizing the peak amplification at caustic points.

The inner boundary is at the event horizon, the outer boundary is at null infinity. The visualization stops when the back-scatter dominates.

The video first shows the non-spinning black hole. The accretion disk rotates around the black hole.

Note that there is a gap between the inner edge of the accretion disk and the black hole itself. The graph at the bottom shows the shape of the emission from the disk.

The video then shows a spinning black hole. Again the accretion disk rotates around the black hole. Note that disk comes closer to the black hole. The graph at the bottom shows the shape of the emission line.

The animation ends with a side-by-side comparison of the non-spinning and the spinning black holes.

The emission from the spinning black hole is less intense than from the non-spinning black hole. It is also spread out over a wider energy range. The rotation of the black hole allows for gas in the disk to get closer.

This gas is subjected to a stronger gravitational redshift and higher velocities. These two effects spread the the line over a larger energy range.

The MWC 656 system consists of a massive "Be" star and a companion black hole.

The star rotates at very high speed, ejecting an equatorial disc of matter that is transferred to the black hole through an accretion disc.
